Provided you know where to look, Scotland has an abundance of local delicacies to ensure your mouth is constantly watering. Whether its Scottish specialities such as Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, or the wide range of meat, fish or seafood, local cheeses, delicious pastries and desserts...Scotland can cater for every appetite.
HAGGIS – beef, sheep’s liver, heart and lungs, onions, oatmeal, salt and pepper are the ingredients of this delicious sausage, usually served with neeps (mashed turnip) and tatties, potatoes. Trust us when we say it is well worth trying! It even has a poem dedicated to its honour by Robert Burns - known in England as the “Scottish Shakespeare” but up in Scotland, Shakespeare is known as the “English Burns!” FISH AND SEAFOOD – For fish-lovers, Scotland is paradise. Its sea, fresh water lochs and rivers have made Scotland a world famous destination for fishing. There are many speciality restaurants serving the freshest tuna steaks, Scottish salmon, trout, mackerel and a wide variety of shellfish such as lobster, langoustines, scallops, prawns, oysters...they are all absolutely delicious! Order a bowl of Cullen Skink – (a rich Scottish soup made of smoked Finnan haddock, cream, potatoes and onions) or a homemade fish pie and for a true British experience, do not forget to treat yourself with fish and chips! CHEESES - What better way to finish off a meal, than relaxing with a selection of wonderful Scottish cheeses. From soft, fresh ones to more mature versions, with proper cheese mongers, shops specialised in selling cheeses. Among its specialities we recommend the Seriously Strong cheddar, the Crowdie or the Bishop Kennedy. Let us know which is your favourite! DESSERTS – Great Britain in general is fantastic for its choice of delicious desserts: you cannot leave Scotland without having tried Sticky Toffee Pudding (a spongy cake dipped in caramel), Banoffee Pie (a dessert made of layers of condensed milk, fresh cream and banana slices), chocolate fudge, cheesecakes, Pavlovas (meringue) etc... Desserts worthy of a place on anyone’s menu and well worth the calories! WHISKYS AND ALES – The reputation of Scottish whiskies has travelled thousands of miles and brought hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world to their distilleries. Scotland has a mind-boggling variety of whiskey, everything from rare, complex single malts right the way through to easy-drinking blends, ideal for cocktails or “hot toddies”. Unwind after a hard day in the classroom and indulge yourself with this amber serum (in moderation!). For those you prefer something milder, sample some of the fantastic Scottish beers, like Bitter and Twisted, Old Jock and Teuchters.
